Split-Level Modernization: CA Front Yard Entry

This front yard project focused on completely updating the curb appeal and accessibility of a split-level California home. The design addresses the tiered elevation by creating a cohesive, welcoming, and modern entrance. Using a minimalist palette of materials—concrete, light stone, and metal—the yard offers a clean, architectural foundation that is softened by intentionally layered, drought-tolerant planting.

Key Features of the Front Yard Entry

  • Modernized Entry Steps: The original front steps were completely redesigned with streamlined concrete treads and a contemporary black metal handrail, creating a strong, clean vertical line that complements the architecture.
  • Textured Stone Walls: Low retaining walls built with stacked light stone define the planting beds and provide subtle texture, balancing the smooth finishes of the home and driveway.
  • Geometric Walkway: A side access path is created using large, square concrete pavers set in a bed of lawn or aggregate, providing a clear, modern secondary access point.
  • Layered Naturalistic Planting: The garden beds use a variety of grasses, low-lying shrubs, and small trees to introduce color and organic texture, which visually softens the starkness of the concrete and stone.
  • Cohesive Design Palette: The use of warm wood accents (shutters and fencing) and dark bronze/black lighting fixtures bridges the contemporary landscape design with the traditional elements of the home's exterior.
